Text Box: IAGT is going into it's 8th year in the community of Irving, Texas. Most of our students are in the Irving Independent School District.. We have come a long way and have learned a lot collectively and individually concerning the dynamics of maintaining a healthy organization. We have had lean and full seasons.
Our Founder, Shannon South as an accomplished GT educator who raised a gifted and talented son who graduated in the top 5% of his class had a genuine heart of concern for the program her son successfully exampled.  Ms. South's experience as a parent of a GT child, her education, and her often pragmatic view steered the Charter Members as they developed a solid foundation for the organization. She resisted any hierarchy in structure while advocating a circular realm of accountability that enabled ever parent, general member, or Board Member to function according to their capacity and desire.
The structure has served us well over the years encouraging a spirit of camaraderie and mutuality working toward the same end, "Putting the GT Student First".
Using the foundational By laws borrowed from the HEB Gifted and Talented group, a charter committee of two expounded on the base By Laws and developed a flexible format that could be adapted to the volunteer base available each year.  The organizations potential to flourish matches the amount of volunteer energy expended.  The bylaws are such a solid template for operation that there is never any need to reinvent the wheel. consequently freeing the organizational focus to execute programs, care for the campuses, and generate more membership.
We would like to share any of our experiences and material with any other sister GT group that have an interest or need in developing their own GT organization.

Text Box: We want to Congratulate and Encourage the New and even more Mature GT Parent & Friends Groups for initiating such and endeavor and even more - maintaining it with all the busy lives we live in our culture today.. We have found that those who Volunteer are usually active in many organizations.  With the temptation to spread ourselves too thin, we would exhort you to keep your Gifted and Talented group a priority. The State Legislatures, State Board of Educations and even the Local School Districts need to know we are concerned and vigilant  watch and care for the gifted and talented student population. Since they are often a minority, they tend to be over looked especially when budgets and funding are involved. In the State of Texas, our active Parent & Friend Groups enhance the Gifted and Talented Rating for each school. The group is a criteria for the Exemplary Rating of a School District's Gifted and Talented Program.
